Wellness Natural Food for Pets offers a wide variety of foods to meet the needs of different life-stages and dogs with special dietary needs.

Food Allergies and Ingredient Intolerances

Food intolerance refers to a gastrointestinal response triggered by certain ingredients. For instance, a dog with a sensitive stomach may not be able to tolerate certain ingredients that then lead to diarrhea, vomiting or irritable bowel. The reasons for food intolerance are unknown.

A food allergy refers to an immune response to a particular ingredient in food that can cause itching, scratching, hot spots, hair loss, ear and eye secretions or excessive licking. A dog may be born with specific allergies, or they may build over time from prolonged exposure to certain ingredients. The most common food allergens for dogs are beef, dairy products and wheat. (The most common offenders are some of the most common ingredients in dog foods.)

Colin M.Top Contributor: Calligraphy5.0 out of 5 starsVerified Purchase Great for sensitive stomachs, avoid the fish flavors (smell) and even makes your dog poop less! You also use far less. See more Our McNabb Border Collie has a bizarrely sensitive stomach when it comes to dog food. She can only eat very limited ingredient dog foods, no matter the cost, or she has near-constant diarrhea. Been that way since she was a puppy. Wellness simple has always been easy on her stomach, and she eats it happily (I can''t report for picky eaters, because she''ll eat anything she can fit in her mouth)

In addition to being great for her sensitive stomach, there are some other perks to using a limited ingredient, grain free dog food. Since this stuff is so nutritionally dense, you don''t use as much dog food, which also means that this stuff comes out as being nearly as cheap as the cheaper stuff. A 45lb dog normally eats about 2 cups of cheap food a day. Our dog maintains her weight (and the vet confirmed this is correct) with HALF that. literally half a cup twice a day and she maintains her weight. We give her another 1/3 cup if she''s had a particularly active day.

The other great thing is that your dog doesn''t poop as much! our dog only needs to go once a day, sometimes even every other day. Her stools are very dense (again, checked with the vet, this is normal) and since she doesn''t go as much, it makes picking up poop much better, to boot!

If you can afford it, I do believe the zignature brand food is even higher quality (and my dog absolutely goes berserk for the kangaroo formula) with the same perks, but since I do have to live on a budget, wellness simple is the least expensive quality dog food that keeps my pup from riding a diarrhea rocket into low earth orbit.

My only suggestion is to stick with the lamb and turkey based flavors. The duck and fish smell EXTREMELY strongly, so you have been warned.

Amazon currently sells this stuff for upwards of $20/bag cheaper than petco/petsmart.

After eating this food her gums turned bright pink, she started salivating like crazy and tried eating anything and everything to make herself throw up. She''s always been a greedy eater with digestive problems, and we thought this food might help. If anything, it did the opposite, making the problem much worse.

She was on Hill''s Sensitive Stomach but still got indigestion, and I didn''t like that the food had so much corn meal and little meat. I read some reviews claiming Wellness was a better product for dogs with digestive problems. I slowly switched her over, and once she was on 100% Wellness she got sick every night. I quickly transitioned her over to Blue Buffalo and she''s been doing great, but I had a bunch of leftover Wellness and decided to give it to our other dog since it''s supposedly such a good food. He wouldn''t touch it. He''d stare at it hungrily, but refused to eat the kibble.

I should add that our sensitive stomach dog will eat absolutely anything, so apparently she didn''t mind the taste so much as the ingredients. I assumed her willingness to eat indicated that the food was fine, but her condition afterward told a different story.

I called Wellness about this situation and only got an answering service. I left messages 3 times and never received a return call. Luckily Amazon refunded this awful food, but I can''t stress enough how incredibly disappointed I am with this product. Do not feed this to your dogs, ever.

See more The dog food itself is great and that deserves 5 stars - My two heelers have reduced their scratching and my pitbull no longer passes noxious gas! The problem was the bag of food. It had a lot more of the usual amount of "sediment" or that powdered kibble you see at the very bottom of the bag. I do not know if it was that way before or after shipping, but the shipping box was oversized and when I picked up the box to put it on my dolly, the bag of food moved around freely inside and I could hear the kibble tumbling around. When I opened the shipping box I saw the bag of food was not secured inside. So during shipment, and because the bag was not secured in such a large box, it slid around crushing the kibble. I think this was a random occurrence. Otherwise I am satisfied with my purchase and have always had a good experience with Amazon. I will continue to shop Amazon and am very happy with the Prime membership. 7 people found this helpful Helpful Report Good Shepherd5.0 out of 5 starsVerified Purchase Pay More Get More: A Happy Dog Reviewed in the United States on April 14, 2020 My poor Rat Terrier has been gnawing, scratching, rubbing on the furniture, letting me rub and scratch on him for long periods of time. See more My sheltie started losing his hair a couple of years ago and we spent months trying to get his coat back. He would have these big brown patches of bald spots all over and his white collar was frizzy and dull. We tried salmon and raw food diets...and it got worse and worse. The vet said he needed to go on the hypoallergenic formula they sold in their office and the holistic health side of me was screaming "there has to be something else!!" I finally gave this a try. There''s so much out there about grain free for dogs...so we did that and our pup just got worse and worse. I switched him to this and within 2 months he got his coat back and his gums were nice and pink again. I am SO thankful for this dog food. I love this brand AND I love this company! We now think that fish and potato are two ingredients that he''s allergic to (which is what most articles and vets will send people to if they have allergy-prone pets). So if you have the same issue...try this. Apparently even in different flavors a lot of the same proteins are still present. As far as the limited ingredient diet foods, this brand is much more reasonable than some I''ve seen, and with a ~70lb. GSD (plus three other large dogs) it can get fairly pricey very quickly.
