What is science-led nutrition?

Nutrition inspired by science — not trends — creates differences you can see, feel and trust. Our food scientists understand the combinations of nutrients and ingredients to help support lifelong health.

How much should I feed my pet?

Most Science Diet foods have a feeding guide on the package to help you determine the proper amount for your pet. It's critical to your pet's health that his or her physical condition be monitored regularly and the feeding amount adjusted as needed.

How can I tell if an unopened can or bag of cat or dog food is still good?

The datecode on our plastic bags is located on the left gusset, near the 4 or 5-digit SKU number, toward the bottom of the bag. The datecode on our medium and large bags will be located on the top of the bag, generally the front flap.

How should I store my cat or dog’s dry food?

Bags of dry Science Diet, Healthy Advantage and Prescription Diet cat or dog food should be stored in a cool, dry environment under 100°F (38°C).

My local pet stores don''t carry this and it''s a little higher priced than some other options but worth every penny. My 2 shih tzu are 14 and 15 years old, have missing teeth and sensitive stomachs. They have been eating this food for about a year now and have never had a problem eating or digesting it, and seem to enjoy the taste. I have tried a few other senior dog foods on the market but either the kibble was too large or it didn''t have enough nutrition. One had a hard time gaining weight and the other was overweight, but they are now both at a healthy weight since I switched to Hill''s Science Diet for 11+. I was unable to purchase this food one month and bought another brand and saw a decline in their health so I hurried and switched back. 52 people found this helpful Helpful Report vida5.0 out of 5 starsVerified Purchase The taste is ok (My dog thinks) but I definitely ... Reviewed in the United States on March 5, 2017 The taste is ok (My dog thinks) but I definitely see a difference in my dog. She digests it really well and the stool is very healthy looking since she started eating this (sorry about gross details lol) 84 people found this helpful Helpful Report Patrick B.5.0 out of 5 starsVerified Purchase Saved my 16yo Shih Tzu’s life. Our 16 year old Shih Tzu had lost a lot of weight and mobility in the last year. She also has an extremely sensitive stomach and virtually no reputable brand dog food agreed with her stomach. I’m fact, there were times i thought she was dying from some illness and prepared our little ones for Chloe’s pending departure. Vomiting, not eating for days on end, sleeping alone in a room all day, the whole 9 yards.

In a last ditch effort, I decided to take a chance and switch her to this dog food. My wife had basically got sick and tired of cleaning up her accidents due to her food not agreeing with her.

So After I read a review of another person on her that had 2 elderly shih tzu’s as well, describing the same symptoms as my dog, I told my wife we would try to give this food to her. If she didn’t eat it or puked it up, Chloe was going to be put down by the end of next week. Well, this food literally saved her life.

It arrived 2 days ago. I immediately opened it and Chloe shot up off her bed (a miracle in itself) and eat food for the first time in 4-5 days. She literally refused to eat, survived on a few cheese slices a day is the only thing she would eat. She drank water fine, so that’s what clues me in to a last ditch Hail Mary food switch.

Let me tell you all this, my 16 year old dog, on the verge of malnutrition and literally half dead, has been gobbling this food up like the last supper for the last 2 days. She’s pooping solid, no vomiting, and has seeming made a miraculous recovery.

UPDATE: 4/7/21

Well it was good while it lasted but we had to put our dog to sleep. Poor girl
This stuff is amazing!!

My chihuahua has been eating science diet since she was 6 weeks old. She went through many stages but always science diet. She is now 12 years old, very healthy and active, best part she loves this food. The only thing she hates is getting her picture taken. She loves the 11+ senior small paws Science Diet! No coaxing necessary to get her to eat, which is a big deal for her.
Not only has my Daisy Belle regained her appetite, but she has also lost extra weight that she''d gained over the past 3 years. Since senior doggie food has less fat and lower protein levels, she can eat just as much as before, and she''s now slim, trim, and much spryer! Her energy levels are back to where they were when she was much younger.

I was also a bit disheartened to see that it didn’t have a great rating from dogfoodadviser. Apparently lack of transparency on meat sources as well as a couple of controversial ingredients have knocked it down to a 3.5. I wouldn’t have ordered it had I known this, but my vet is pretty old school and he recommended Science Diet. I believe the prescription diets are rated better.
So, we have moved onward to another food, she better like one soon, I prefer getting a subscription to keep me from forgetting and running out!

See more I not someone who usually obcess over the list of ingredients or spend hours by analysing every single ingredients because honestly every animal, just like people , have an individual programing and they meant to live longer and not get certain disease then it will be that way regardless of what brand of food they are eating for as long as they don''t eat human junk food and dog treats . My baby is a little resque doggy who I got when he was already 7 or more . It''s been 4.5 years and my little guy is still doing ok for the exception of arthritis which got little worthe since I got him but that would happen with any food. I.keep my guy clean and stress free, give him good quality CBD oil,. Don''t let him smell and leak anything on the ground or grass, whipe his paws after going outside and he doesn''t like dog treats. He only has few teeth left so I have to put something soft into his dry food and I choose to rather put good quality hot dog , or cooked meatballs, chicken , ham or whatever meat or soup we are eating . Why would anyone think that canned dog food is better than human fresh food? Yes , he does get some salt and whatever little spices in our meat and soup but it is still way better for him than the most expensive canned dog food. Anyway , I discovered that this is the best dry food my dog ever had since he now poops every day twice a day andthis is great because with every othe dry food he would spend days being constipated. Also the kiblets are small enough for toothless dog to be able to eat it . 3 people found this helpful Helpful Report A5.0 out of 5 starsVerified Purchase Supplementing an Elderly Rat''s Diet Reviewed in the United States on January 26, 2021 One of our rats was quite elderly and had developed a pituitary tumor that affected her balance and seemingly her ability to locate food, as well as chew it. See more One of our rats was quite elderly and had developed a pituitary tumor that affected her balance and seemingly her ability to locate food, as well as chew it. She would take a long time to eat when she finally found it and we were worried she wasn''t getting enough in her body. We used this as a high calorie supplement alongside lab blocks, soaking them until they were mush so she could eat it better. This kibble takes quite a while to soak, but the taste was well loved. An important quality to note is that it smells very strongly and that seemed to help our rat locate the food bowl better, which ended up being very helpful! However if you have any other pets who are food thieves you can be sure they will come to take it - I don''t like the smell but the rats in the other cage would start begging when I brought it out so clearly it has its appeal. After our girl passed I have occasionally given the other rats some to munch on and they go WILD over it. (Keep in mind the high calorie content !! Our rats got roughly a piece each and only as a treat.) Honestly I would reccomend grabbing this to mush up and serve with medications if you have a picky eater.
