A third party Bluetooth controller that will hold your phone seems cost about $20-30. This gamepad does not feel premium.

The main advantage the Moto Gamepad has over others is the magnetic connection and made-to-fit design. And that''s about it. Just about everything else about this controller feels terribly cheap.

Major complaints:
- Face (A/B/X/Y) and D-Pad buttons all feel stiff and have far too much travel. Start/Select buttons are particularly hard to press. Low profile, quick-to-actuate buttons would have been ideal.
- Face buttons are VERY small and cramped close together. Uncomfortable to use over time.

Other observations:
- Not sure why the manufacturer went with more standard control sticks over the flattened analogs like those of the PSP or 3DS. The mod itself is fairly thin, I''d rather have a thicker unit with flatter analogs if it were more comfortable to hold.
- Symmetrical analogs over face buttons and D-Pad, like the WiiU. Again, why? Just about any other layout would have been preferable.
- The shoulder buttons have small LEDs that flash every time you press a button on the corresponding side. Thankfully, the first thing the tutorial teaches you is how to turn this feature off. It seems to serve no purpose other than to drain the internal battery.

Pros:
- The mod itself - the matte slab of plastic - feels sturdy enough in the hand.
- Plug-and-play. No setup required as long as your games/applications are already set up to take controller inputs.
- Magnets hold the phone firmly in place. I was never worried about it falling out.

I''ve had $20 controllers that felt better than this thing. I understand that there was a requirement to keep everything within a small form factor, and the internal wiring might be a lot more complex than other controllers I''ve tried in order to maintain compatibility. That said, I cannot imagine how the magnetic connection makes this priced so high. It''s a shame, the idea of a moto mod gamepad seems great, but this doesn''t feel worth it, not when similar products cost less than half as much for what look like a much more comfortable experience.

See more Ad states that the added battery in the controller adds 8 hours of play time. Not true. There is a known firmware issue and the internal battery does nothing. Doesn''t charge the phone, and doesn''t power the controller. After hours of playing, my internal battery is still at 100%, and my phone battery is down to 25%.

Other than that little issue, the controller works wonderfully, but be advised the internal battery powers nothing at all.

I am using the new Moto Z4.

See more I tried out the Moto Z Fore and this Moto mod from a friend and was instantly hooked. The gamepad is responsive. I''ve thus far had no problems using it with many of the popular software you would use this for. The battery life is insane. Mine is still going on it''s first charge, and I''m pretty sure I''ve clocked close to ten hours here and there on it. When you attach this to your Z Force, a separate power icon will appear showing how much battery the Gamepad has left. It doesn''t feel like a cheaper piece of junk to me. I have had no issues with the joy sticks that I''d seen other people complaining about.

If I had any real gripe, it would be that I don''t like how slim profile the front shoulder buttons are. I have big fingers, so sometimes it can be a little tricky to hit them without getting some of the rear shoulders. With how slim the mod is it''s understandable. Most of the programs I''m using seem to dedicate those buttons to functions I don''t really need.

I think I''d prefer a Switch/3DS layout (thumbsticks above), or xbox layout (thumbsticks above on left, but below on right). d-pad is meh, and doesn''t do diagonals well, mostly use the joystick (even for games that were originally for a d-pad, like Pokemon Yellow or Earthbound). I like playstation layout (thumbsticks below), for many things, but you need the playstation style handle so you can slide your right hand down since it will be pressing the buttons more often than using the stick whereas vice versa for the right side), and those handles would add comfort but also extra bulk, so the easiest fix is to just the xbox layout.

I thought the triggers would be a problem, but they work quite well.

Also 3DS style joysticks which are flat, and slide instead of rotating, might have been a better choice.

It''s kinda buky and hard to transport, but not more so than some Bluetooth gamepad''s I''ve used.

See more This is a deeply flawed product, but the most popular alternative is even worse.

As for the moto mod gamepad here, the D pad is absolutely atrocious and completely unusable. You have to press very hard for the press to register, and forget about getting diagonals to register, because those are extremely finicky. If you want to play games, you''re definitely going to want to use the analog stick, which is also deeply flawed. In the upward position, I have verified through a controller testing app called "Gamepad Tester" that a full upward press is not registered by the analog stick, instead it only gets you about 85% of the way there. (See photo for what this looks like, the green dots should be able to reach the top of the square) On some games the sensitivity can be adjusted, on other games this makes them unplayable.

There is a solution, and it''s not too be taken lightly. I had to use a fresh box cutter to carve out the casing around the left analog stick. You are going to want to start by carving out a diagonal slope, eliminating the raised corner that that analog stick would otherwise hit. With each bit of carving, going about up to the grey ring on the casing around the analog stick, I was able to get a few more percentage points out of that upward action. Be careful not to nic the analog stick itself too much. Once I carved enough that I could consistently get 100%, I knew I was done. See photo for what this carving out looks like once done.

The controller is not at all comfortable and it took me a few days to find the best position to hold it in. It does offer all four shoulder buttons and the other buttons are good enough as well.

If you have a Moto Z and want a wired, rotoscoping style gamepad, (this game pad doesn''t actually rotoscope, but similar options have to since they are designed for any type of phone) this controller is your only option. So suck it up and get ready to carve out the space around the analog stick, because the most popular option aside from this is even worse. That option is the Razor Kishi which feels great in your hands and has excellent buttons, but disconnects so frequently it is completely unusable, and there no modifications that can fix that. Another option that I have not tried is the Gamesir X2. Maybe it''s fine, who knows. But I''m not going through this a third time. However on that one the USB C port is on the wrong side, and lots of games will want to display upside-down.

So, you win, Moto, but I don''t respect you.
