See more We bought our GP 5500 model # 59396 serial#7597370A from a local "tractor supplier" store. My brother in law also bought one at roughly the same time. His- very easy to start. Ours- recoil starter very tough to pull day 1 and broke on the second time starting it up. We put on a new recoil starter $45. Still was tough to pull but got it started each time. We used ours at our farm when we needed power out in the field. I believe the units that are hard to pull start have valve issue in the cylinder head. Ours died last week at 50.7 hours. The exhaust valve broke loose from its mount in the cylinder head. Blew the air filter housing cover off and split the filter in two. I''d stay away from General portable generators. I saw at least one or two other reviews that sound like the same problem as ours. Cheap pressed powder aluminum parts. Junk. I ordered a new cylinder head for $85. It''s going to be a bear to fix. 78 people found this helpful Helpful Report Laurencio1.0 out of 5 starsVerified Purchase When you need it most, it failed!!! It operated as it should for about 2 hundred hours, then with a bang and a whimper, it quit. All of the recommended maintenance was followed. No contact was made to customer service, as it was pointless. I had to find a replacement immediately to facilitate day to day needs, with no power, there was no urgency to waste time with customer service and argue about how inferior this product was. It now sits in the garage until after the emergency passes, and I’ll deal with whatever cause it yo stop working. At a 800 dollar price tag, 300 dollar shipping, one would expect this to run a lot longer then just a couple of weeks. If there was a negative rating, I would give it a minus star 24 people found this helpful Helpful Report That guy again4.0 out of 5 starsVerified Purchase Great work generator Reviewed in the United States on June 17, 2019 I bought this generator to power a build I was doing at a remote site that didn''t have power. See more I bought this generator to power a build I was doing at a remote site that didn''t have power. Typically ran equipment (saw, compressor, etc) battery charger, fan, and plug in cooler. I''ve used it in a pinch when the power went. This unit is fairly loud but it works. I''ve had over 100 hours on it and it is running fine. It is stored inside a shed with ethanol free gas and the gas line closed. It starts on the first pull with the choke on. Happy with my purchase. I would hope that they would include better nuts and bolts as the vibration has rattled many of them out. 6 people found this helpful Helpful Report IDS51.0 out of 5 starsVerified Purchase Poor quality control Reviewed in the United States on May 7, 2017 Disappointed in quality control. I filled the gas tank on 5/7/17 and inspected the generator before starting it and noticed the carburetor seal was incorrectly seated at the factory, See pictures. See more I have about 80 hours run time on it now and it does the job.

What I like:
Steel fuel tank and cap (my old one was plastic and it leaked)
Fuel gauge in tank
Hour meter (how else would I know when to change the oil?)

What I do not like:
Heavy to move (the wheels could have been moved a short distance toward the center to hold more weight)
Noisy (and irritating)
Starting pull is harder than needed - no compression relief

I changed the oil at the 25 hour mark and used full synthetic oil. I noticed a sharp decrease in fuel usage afterwards. Also, the sound has gotten less irritating as the generator and motor break in (but still noisy).

See more Our 5500 lasted about a year and a half before we had problems. The voltage regulator broke. Bring it in, it''s under warranty they said. When we got it in, we found out that the warranty is only a full warranty for one year. That would have been helpful to know BEFORE we got it there. The warranty covers parts the second year but not service. We got it "fixed" for around $200 in labor. It turned out not to be the voltage regulator that they replaced. Something else was blowing out the voltage regulator. We need to replace it again, then troubleshoot until we find the actual fix. The repairs might have been more than the cost of a new generator. $200 for a trade in is all we got. I''d give it a 0 rating if I could. This thing is a piece of crap. I will never buy anything Generac makes again. I''d suggest you do the same. Spend the extra $ and get a Honda or you will pay more in the long run. 36 people found this helpful Helpful Report Patrick4.0 out of 5 starsVerified Purchase Generac 5939 GP5500 6,875 Watt 389cc OHV Portable Gas Powered Generator Reviewed in the United States on June 30, 2013 I was a little apprehensive about purchasing this generator with all the negative reviews. See more I was a little apprehensive about purchasing this generator with all the negative reviews. I ignored my doubts and bought it, and I have no regrets. The generator fired up on the first pull without a hitch. I didn''t experience any fuel tank leakage that other reviewers discribed.

I filled it with a little over a gallon of ethanol free gasoline, because I read somewhere that the ethanol with eat away at the plastic/rubber components if left in the lines for awhile. I added Sta-Bil fuel stabilizer to the gasoline before filling. I run the generator 30 minutes every 3 months and turn off the fuel line and let it run dry. Don''t fill up the tank and let the generator sit because even with Sta-Bil fuel stabilizer the fuel will go bad after awhile.

4 stars because the generator is a little noisy, but for the price it was expected.
