Innovation Inspired by You
Our focus is simple. To make powerful, dependable and easy-to-use engines that make work easier for you. We have been doing it for 110 years and it's why 8 of the top 10 mower brands trust us to power their equipment.
Why choose an OEM gasket?
Only Briggs & Stratton genuine parts are specially designed to exact Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) standards. Not only are Briggs & Stratton genuine parts assured to fit, but using them ensures that the Briggs & Stratton engine they are installed on complies with applicable (EPA) emission regulations.
Before doing any small engine repair or maintenance, be sure to check your manual for recommendations on specific parts numbers and safety precautions.
Checking and Replacing Gaskets
Common Gasket Problems
Signs of a bad gasket can be the engine “dropping out” or not starting due to a lack of pressure. Oil leaks and excessive smoke from the exhaust are also signs of a bad gasket
How to Install a New Gasket
Check your engine manual for the correct model number to reference gasket part numbers. Remove the old gasket and with a razor blade remove all debris and remaining gasket particles. Align the new gasket and re-assemble.
Gasket Sets
Gasket sets are available for rebuilding carburetors and engines. When disassembling equipment and breaking any seals it’s recommended to replace the gasket and re-seal.
General Lawnmower and Small Engine Maintenance
Are you changing your oil, replacing your air filter and adding fuel stabilizer to your outdoor power equipment as frequently as you should be? General engine maintenance will help your engine last longer and run better. Using genuine parts on your Briggs & Stratton engine will make sure it fits right and runs the way it’s supposed to

The B&S 19.5 engine is no stranger to head gasket problems. I''ve had two tractors with that engine and both blew head gaskets right around 40 hours of use. Huge plumes of white smoke are the usual symptom and will usually start when turning as the oil shifts in the engine. Replacing the gasket is SUPER simple! Anyone can do it- just pay attention. All the bolts on mine were the same length but that is not the case with all engines- just keep track of where they go. Clean off the surface on the head and the cylinder without scratching it, slap on new gasket and bolt it back together. Do NOT Rambo on the head bolts- the torque specs may vary by engine, but are quite low and tighter isn''t better. Unfortunately, like many people who have ordered this- mine was bent by the kind, gentle and lovely Post Office employees. Sure, they don''t realize that bending it causes problems- but it does. I flattened it out and rolled the dice- so far, so good. This happens more often than not when I order gaskets online. Plan for an hour if you''ve never done this before- that leaves time to clean it up as you go and a couple breaks to ponder what you''re doing. From start to finish, I replaced the head gasket and installed new carb and fuel pump... just under an hour total.

Just remember the torque for the head bolts is 200 INCH-POUNDS and not FOOT-POUNDS. 200 inch-pounds = 16.7 foot-pounds.

Arrived with seams in it from it being folded. The box was pristine so it was damaged before it was packaged for shipping - nice, thanks. Good enough for this old mower I thought. Went ahead and used it. Mower idled beautifully, I let it warm up, raised the throttle and it blew smoke and shut down. Compression test showed 30psi. Removed head and sure enough, it was blown at the seams. Buying another locally.

It''s a slightly wider section in one area of the head where it''s common for them to blow out into the pushrod cavity. I''ve worked on mowers and dirt bikes before, so this was easy to do. I think most people could do it with about $30 worth of tools.

So happy when I received the gasket, it was in a nice big box. I was worried about ordering from what others had said that it just showed up in an envelope and was all bent up. Opened the box and inside was the gasket in original plastic bag. It looked like someone had just grabbed it and made sure to give it a good crunching up before putting it in the box. Was easy to return but had to wait another day to fix mower. Cost $2 more at a local lawnmower shop
