After 15 years and about seven different disc/ sheet sanders from Black and Decker and Ridgid (rectangular flat sheet, iron shaped, orbital, 5", 6", ...) and my 5" Ridgid starting to give the ghost with some metal grinding noises (after probably 100 hours of sanding in many years) I needed a new 5" orbital. I was tempted to go with another 5" Ridgid but it had a few shortcomings: bit bulky to hold, the recessed on off switch, no pistol grip with trigger switch. So I looked at half a dozen other brands at the big box stores. Enter this Makita. About $20 extra for this Makita, but with a pistol grip with trigger switch and second hand grip! It is a LOT more comfortable to use than any of my orbital palm sanders. You can use two hands or single hand it, and give your hands a rest with a differing position during extended use as you can switch around using the knob, top and pistol grip. It is also lighter weight, so easier to use above the shoulders and overhead. The soft start and stop is fantastic, combined with the trigger switch. No more high speed circular gouge marks as with some other sanders. It does an average job of sucking dust into its little baggy. The shop vac port is rather small and the adapter is rubbery but seems to lack a bit of depth to latch on to the shop vac hose better. I have to reseat the hose every few minutes. In my opinion, it should be redesigned with a bigger diameter tube and deeper connecting shop vac adapter.
In a perfect world it would also have a small vacuum shroud surrounding (akin Ridgid 2611) for a dustless experience when hooked up to a shop vac.
Besides the average dust collection and the so so shop vac connector, I love it and hope to use it for hours and years to come.

Not taking credit for this wonderful discovery, some other person posted this, but I had to dig for it. Maybe this will help others!
Update...WOW make sure you have hearing protection when using this combination! The vacuum through that small port makes a loud sound, enough to hurt your hearing.

"Sanding is my favorite task" - said no one, ever. But let me tell ya, sanding with this bad boy is almost a pleasure. I''ve owned a few Makita tools over the years, but none recent, until this beauty. I''m glad to see Makita is still making quality tools.
The first thing you notice is that the case it comes in could probably survive a nuclear attack. Even good tools often come in cheap cases - not here. I won''t go over the controls - it''s a sander, you can probably figure it out. I will say that the vibration that''s transferred from the sander to my hand is noticeably less than any other sander I''ve used, including the DeWalt. I''ve never considered vibration to be a problem per se - I mean, it''s a sander. That''s what they''re supposed to do - they vibrate. But somehow Makita has figured out how to focus that vibration into the work piece instead of your hands. On large sanding tasks, it saves you a lot of fatigue.
And did I mention "quiet"? My goodness this thing is *quiet* for a sander. Like quieter than any I''ve ever used. That just adds to the overall ease of use that makes this sander an outstanding value at twice the price.
My favorite feature of this sander is also, unfortunately, the only bad thing about it. It has a variable speed knob (a feature that I LOVE and didn''t know I needed until I had it), almost like a variac, on the top of the handle. Even though it''s printed with numerals 1-5, there are no detents, and the knob itself turns quite easily. Being on the top of the handle means that you''re probably going to accidentally change the motor speed as you''re sanding unless you''re super-careful. This isn''t a huge deal, but it''s really the only thing that detracts from what is otherwise hands-down the best orbital sander I''ve ever used. Makita could fix this one tiny flaw by putting detents on that speed knob.

Using the "Universal Corrugated Drain Hose for dishwashers" suggested elsewhere to connect the sander to my Shopvac did not work for me.
The connection was solid, but it screeched like a banshee. Even with hearing protection, I couldn''t use it.
Instead, I bought two products for around the same price that let me make the connection without increasing the noise level significantly.
The parts are: Dishwasher/disposer connector (Eastman part #0023546) and Shopvac "Universal Tool Adapter" (Shopvac part #79903-15).
The part that was not immediately apparent is that you need to use a hacksaw to saw off the small end of the connector to make it fit Makita.
This has the added benefit of allowing you to disconnect the hose easily, so you can switch quickly between sanding and vacuuming.
Overall this is a great sander. It feels great in the hand, sands quickly, and is very controllable.
The worst thing the Makita has shown is my own tendency to oversand. The work is over so quickly, you feel like you should do more. 🙂

I recently bought this on Amazon after being so frustrated by an older Ryobi ROS I have been using. The Ryobi had no speed control and started up so quickly that it constantly spun grooves into the wood; exactly the point of what the "random" in random orbital sander is supposed to mitigate!
First off you''re getting Makita''s trusted craftsmanship in their product and although you may pay a bit more for the name, they''ve built their name to be trusted. Makita tools also come with some of the best hard shell cases to keep your new tool protected which is always a huge plus for me.
The sander has a speed selection dial that goes from slowest of 1 to the fastest of 5. This feature alone is worth every penny. Hard wood? Crank it to 5 and melt away the wood. Softer wood? Put it down to 3 and be confident that you won''t dig into the wood. I just used the sander on about a 1.5-2 to very gently soften the edges of a 45º rip cut and it worked perfectly.
The power button is actually a hold-to-stay-on trigger but there is a button above the trigger that will keep the sander on after you let go of the trigger. Even without keeping it on, the trigger offers no resistance and it''s effortless to hold down while sanding, but the keep-on button really is a plus.
The sander comes with a quick release handle that surrounds the middle of the base for two handed operation. This is such a great feature and allows two handed use and saves the strain on the main arm if this feature wasn''t included. Again, big surface area? Hard wood? No problem! Crank that dial up to 5, put a 40-80 grit paper on there grab this sucker with two hands and let the sander do the work.
The base is a standard 5" hook and loop base that accepts any paper that has the soft end portion of hook and loop attachments. I even found a 400grit "paper" at a big box store that makes the wood soft as a baby''s bottom. It''s actually not paper at all, it''s sort of a soft screen but it grabs the hook and loop base with no issues.
There is seriously zero to complain about this tool. It has cut back so much frustration and probably hours of work and muscle strain. Trust the name. If you''re in the market for a sander, this is the top of the heap.

I''ve been using sanders for about 30 yrs and I have used everything from Bosch and Porter Cable to Rigid with some Harbor Freight ones thrown in just out of curiosity. I bought a Makita 1/4 sheet sander back in the 90s and it lasted well with lots of abuse, but for whatever reason, I went on to other brands. I came across this sander on a fluke and saw all the great reviews so I bought it. WOW! It is an incredible sander. The paddle switch is actually really nice to have and it locks so you dont have to grip the switch on long sanding sessions. I didnt think Id like the side handle, but I love it. Great control and comfort. I don''t know what makes the Makita different than other brands, but it does work better and I can remove material much faster and the built in dust collection is way better than any other. I liked this so much I went on and bought a 2nd one. I run my HF sander a few minutes and it gets hot. I ran this for about 45 minutes and it wasn''t even warm. Excellent built sander.

This thing rocks! After fifty years, I finally decided to spend a bit extra instead of replacing the last of an endless line of cheap palm sanders. For eons I was too cheap to opt for the convenience of self-adhering sandpaper because it was, well, convenient. It somehow didn''t fit the Calvinistic view of life I seem to have suffered from. But today, boxes of precut, self-adhereing paper on Amazon are cheaper than the full hardware sheets I used to cut up and clip on. The sandpaper not only is easier to use, the controllable power of this sander is amazing! My hands just won''t take much abuse anymore; and this random orbit Makita is perfect for and to them. I get no numbness or pain even upon extended use of the sander. And it sands about twice as fast as any palm sander I ever used. A great sander if you have the money; and if you don''t have the money, quit drinking beer for a month and buy one with what you''ve saved.

But, I am disappointed and unsure whether to keep it for the following reasons: 1. Dust handling is poor even with a shop vac. Dust exist the base of the sander without being sucked through the dust port and accumulates all over the base of the sanding pad. I''m really surprised given I have a good dust handling system and my previous orbital sander performed excellently in this regard. 2. On pieces larger than the width of the sanding pad (eg: table top) the sander grabs the surface consistently which stall the sanding pad and causes swirl marks. I have never experience this behaviour on even cheaper model sanders. I tried different sand paper grades with the same result. The behaviour is also very tiring on hands and arms as you struggle to keep the sander flat and under control. 3. The grip is wonderful. 4. The power of the sander if excellent. 5. When sanding material smaller than the width of the sanding pad, the performance and handling is superb but the spewing of dust still exists and is simply unacceptable. I suspect I might have a defective sander but I simply don''t have enough information to indicate there''s a technical / manufacturing issue with this particular sander or this model. I''ve noted others indicated that this model sold on Amazon has not been reliable and that buying from a retail store has resulted in higher product satisfaction. Has anyone else noted the sander grabbing the surface being sanded causing a jerking movement? Has anyone else noted that the sander spews dust even with a vacuum attached?2 people found this helpfulReport
